What are Bed Bugs?
Bed bugs are wingless insects, roughly oval in shape, 4-5mm long when fully grown. Their color ranges from light tan to a deep brown or burnt orange, they may appear dark red or even black just after feeding. Bed bugs have flat bodies that make it easy for them to slip in and out of small cracks and crevices.

Bed bugs are parasitic insects that feed on the blood of humans, much like mosquitoes or fleas. If people are not available they will feed off of any other warm blood animals, such as dogs or cats.

Where do Bed Bugs come from?
Bed Bugs can be found in every country in the world. Infestations were very common during the 1950s and 60s, but had since dropped of, in recent years there has been an uprising of bed bugs in the United States .

Bed bugs are commonly spread by "hitchhiking." They do not travel on humans, but they can be transported through luggage, clothing, beds, and furniture. This often becomes a problem for hotels, motels, and apartment buildings were tenants are frequently coming and going. Secondhand furniture is also a typical way for clean homes to be come infested.

Where do they live?
Bed Bugs typically occur in rooms where people sleep; they commonly come out at night to feed off available host and lay eggs. Their favorite places to hide are bed frames, mattresses, and box springs. They also like to hide in headboards, upholstered furniture, and carpets, even in window treatments and behind wallpaper. Cluttered areas offer many dark cracks and crevices to hide in and make it difficult to find the source of the infestation after they have become established.

How can they be eliminated?
Bed bug infestation can be identified by blood spots on bed linens and furniture where the bugs may have been crushed after feeding, brown fecal spots on mattresses and carpets. Careful inspection of bed frames, undersides of windows, loose molding, and any other dark space may determine if you have an infestation.

Dusting, vacuuming, and soap and water are not enough to get rid of these pests. Thorough chemical treatment is required once these insects have become established in your home; sometimes multiple treatments may even be necessary.
