Are you able to form a "U" shape with this gate?

Yes.

How far apart are the slats? I would like to use this for my pet rabbit, but I want to make sure he can't squeeze between the slats

The space between the slats is approximately 1 and 7/8 inches.

I have a small dog that doesn't try and knock over these gates, so these work perfect! And no hassle like the fitted door way gates, no having to climb over or undo it all and redue it. Just set it and your good to go, if you need to go through just move one of the sections like a door and move it back afterwards, easy. Durable too!

I purchased 2 of these gates to keep my puppies within my living-room. However, I am using them to create a protective barrier for my plants. I joined them both & formed like a little balcony & it looks very sweet. Keeping puppies & plants safe!!
